how often should i sprint?

Sprinting, and getting faster is all about consistency. Consistency is key!

That being said, there are a few rules you should follow regarding your training volume to ensure a nice smooth, injury free, journey.

  1. When I say ‘sprint’ I’m referring to efforts in the 90-100% max effort range. Initially, a good program will have you sprint at sub-maximal efforts (75-85% range) over shorter distances (10 yards) to allow for tissue acclimation

  2. You should aim to sprint train at least 2 - 3 times per week

  3. Take at least a day between sprint training sessions (48 hours) for recovery. Remember: growth comes during the rest phase not while you’re training!

  4. Aim to sprint at least once per week in season. Yes, that’s right - anyone saying you don’t need to sprint in season is wrong. Dead wrong. Sprint training has a residual training effect of around 5-7 days, so if you’re not max sprinting then you’ll begin to get slower!

  5. Aim to hit somewhere in the 100-250 yards range, per session

  6. Finally, any good speed program will have not only a solid warm-up and cool down but also mobility drills (think joint range of motion) aimed at keeping you limber and healthy.
